Woolworths and Coles commit to price drops

Hundreds of household staples are being reduced at Woolworths as the supermarket offers mild reprieve for consumers.

Hundreds of household staples are being reduced at Woolworths as the supermarket offers mild reprieve for consumers fielding rising costs of living in just about every other arena.

More than 400 items will be reduced in price for the entirety of Spring, with considerable discounts to be rolled out across staple products including bread, yoghurt and coffee.

“Due to the higher cost of living being felt across all households in Australia, we know customers are looking for better value in their shop,” Woolworths’ chief commercial officer Paul Harker said.

“Our Prices Dropped program will help customers get their Woolies Worth on those everyday essentials, and easy meal solutions throughout Spring.”

Woolworths has invested millions on the promotion, which it said on Monday was the biggest ever of its kind.

Reduced prices will take effect on August 24 and last until November 29, and will be representative of popular seasonal products, Woolworths said.

Coles also responded with its own list of price guarantees, locking the price of 1,168 products across supermarkets and online until at least 31 January 2023, and has already begun lowering the price of an additional 500 products.

The extensive list of locked price products and those being lowered in price includes some of the most popular items on Australian shopping lists.

Items to be reduced include 500g RSPCA Chicken Mince, which will drop from $6.50 to $6, 400g Moccona Instant Coffee 400G to be reduced from $26.00 to $20.00, and KB’s Prawn Gyoza 1kg, which is usually $22.70 and will be $17.00.

Chobani Fit in the 170g tubs will be cut from $2.50 to $2, 180g Mersey Valley Cheese from $7.50 to $6, 50g Dilmah Premium Leaf Tea from $5.30 to $3.70, and 500g Western Star Salt/Butter from $7.50 to $7.00.

“This is our largest seasonal Prices Dropped campaign to date and is just one of the ways to get better value by shopping at Woolworths. We will continue to invest and look for ways to help millions of our customers and our team save on their weekly shop,” Mr Harker said.

“Over 150 of these products have a Health Star Rating of 3.5 or higher. These include key family favourites to make meal times easier, healthier and more affordable. We are also providing healthier choices to our customers for snacking, lunch box and breakfast occasions.”

The retail giant is also running an Everyday Rewards promotion allowing customers to get five times the points on all transactions over $50 at main and Metro outlets, as well as online when boosted in the Everyday Rewards App or via email.

In additional, it will continue its “price freeze” on about 200 essentials announced in June through until the end of the year.
