Woolworths is set to mark Australia Day by featuring Australian-made flags and an array of products ideal for the national holiday, reversing its previous stance which had sparked significant controversy. Last year, the supermarket chain faced backlash, including a call from Opposition Leader Peter Dutton for a boycott, after deciding not to stock Australia Day-themed items like thongs and hats adorned with the national flag due to reduced customer interest and the evolving conversation around the significance of January 26.
January 26, known to many as “Invasion Day,” commemorates the commencement of British colonisation in Australia, an event many Indigenous Australians observe as a day of mourning. This date remains a contentious subject, with debates intensifying over its celebration due to its historical implications.
Responding to community input, a spokesperson from Woolworths expressed that both customers and staff members have shown a strong desire to observe the day. “After reflecting on the feedback, we realised the importance of recognising the day with appropriate festivities,” the spokesperson stated. This year, Woolworths plans to enhance the celebration with a focus on exceptional Australian cuisine that complements the holiday, while their Big W stores will promote items suited for family gatherings during the long weekend.
The decision to adjust last year’s policy came after incidents where employees faced physical and verbal abuse following the reduced availability of specific Australia Day merchandise, sparking a political controversy and leading to Dutton’s comments on national radio advocating for a boycott of the retailer.
