Woolworths is bringing a new level of convenience to grocery shopping with the introduction of high-tech smart trolleys at its Noosa Civic store. Launching on 10 July, the digital trolleys are part of a broader push by the supermarket giant to modernise the in-store experience and make shopping more efficient for customers.
The Noosa Civic location is the latest to adopt the technology, following earlier rollouts in North Lakes and Warner. The innovation is exclusive to Everyday Rewards members and forms part of Woolworths’ ongoing investment in digital retail solutions.
With this new system, shoppers can scan and bag their groceries as they move through the store. The trolley features a tablet-style screen that clips securely to the handle. It allows customers to track their spending in real-time and view their item list, eliminating the need to unpack at the checkout. A built-in barcode scanner is used to scan products on the spot, and payments are completed at the self-serve stations on exit.
This initiative expands on Woolworths’ earlier Scan&Go app, launched in 2018. The smart trolley is the next step in that journey, developed by Woolworths Group’s internal digital team. It’s designed to save customers time, offer more transparency during the shop, and reduce friction at checkout.
Staff at the Noosa store have been undergoing training in preparation for the launch and will be available to assist shoppers unfamiliar with the system. Woolworths has emphasised that customer support is key during the rollout phase to ensure a smooth transition to the new shopping method.
The technology is part of a broader strategy by Woolworths to enhance customer experience using in-house digital development. Following trials in selected stores across Sydney in 2024, the trolleys are gradually being introduced in other regions based on customer feedback and operational readiness.
Although specific details about future locations have not yet been disclosed, the success of the pilot program has paved the way for wider adoption across Australia. The company’s focus remains on offering tools that bring value, speed, and control to everyday shopping.
Smart trolleys are just one of many innovations supermarkets are exploring as part of the shift toward tech-enabled retail. By allowing customers to manage their shop as they go, Woolworths is positioning itself at the forefront of digital convenience in the Australian grocery sector.
