Drakes Clovercrest supermarket employee choked and punched in violent video while attempting to stop shoplifting

Security video from a Clovercrest supermarket shows the moment a worker is shockingly attacked by a suspected shoplifter.

A supermarket worker was choked and punched in a violent assault at a Clovercrest check-out.

Video has emerged of an employee at Drakes Clovercrest attempting to stop a man from walking past the check-out, before he is grabbed by the throat and pushed up against railing and punched on Friday last week about 2pm.

The man, wearing a red cap, dark coloured T-shirt and shorts walked up to the shop attendant with one hand behind his back, before the attack broke out.

Footage shows the man stuffing several food items in his pockets, before attempting to leave the store.

Another woman at the check out appeared shaken when the attack broke out, and ran to safety.

The staff member was not injured.

Drakes Supermarkets Director John-Paul Drake said the man was approached as he was suspected of shoplifting.

“The video shows a person assaulting one of my team members after the team member approached this person on suspicion of shopstealing,” he said.

Mr Drake said staff safety was of paramount importance, and confirmed that the staff member had returned to work.

“My team is my number one asset and their safety is worth more than any product I have in my stores,” he said.

“Unfortunately the situation at our Clovercrest store escalated in a fraction of a second resulting in some horrific vision.

“I am glad to report that my team member is unharmed and has happily returned to work.”

SA Police were aware of the footage, and were investigating the incident.
