In a groundbreaking move for Australian supermarkets, Coles is set to trial an innovative AI-powered smart trolley next year. Developed in collaboration with grocery technology specialist Instacart, this new solution is designed to streamline the shopping experience, allowing customers to monitor their spending in real time, pack groceries as they shop, and avoid traditional checkouts altogether.
The trial will kick off in January 2025 at Coles Richmond Traders in Melbourne. These trolleys, equipped with cutting-edge artificial intelligence, sensors, and integrated scales, enable shoppers to scan and pack items directly into their bags as they move through the store.
One of the standout features of the smart trolley is its interactive digital display. The screen provides shoppers with up-to-date information on in-store specials and the locations of specific products, making it easier to find deals and navigate the aisles. Additionally, a live tally of purchases ensures customers can keep track of their spending, helping them stick to their budget.
By scanning the Coles app or their Flybuys card, shoppers can earn loyalty points during their visit. The trolley also introduces a fun twist with gamified rewards—customers who spend $50 or more can “Spin the Wheel” at checkout for a chance to unlock extra discounts on their shopping total.
Ben Hassing, Coles’ Chief Digital Officer, emphasised that the smart trolley highlights Coles’ dedication to providing customers with innovative shopping solutions that save time and enhance convenience.
“As Australia’s first retailer to trial AI-driven trolleys, we’re thrilled to offer shoppers a more engaging and seamless in-store experience. This technology is designed to help customers shop more efficiently, manage their budgets, and check out at their own pace,” said Hassing.
He added that the smart trolley reflects Coles’ broader omnichannel strategy, blending digital advancements with physical shopping. “By testing and refining new solutions, we aim to meet our customers’ evolving needs, offering greater convenience and delivering more value every step of the way.”
Instacart’s Chief Connected Stores Officer, David McIntosh, described the collaboration with Coles as a significant milestone, marking Instacart’s entry into the Asia-Pacific region.
“Over the past decade, Instacart has focused on empowering retailers with technology to better serve their customers, regardless of how they choose to shop. Partnering with Coles to introduce the Caper Cart technology to Australia is an exciting first for both of us,” McIntosh said.
He noted that, in the face of rising living costs, customers particularly value the ability to track their spending in real time through the trolley’s digital display, as well as the potential for additional savings through the gamified discount feature.
Before the trial officially begins, shoppers at Coles Richmond Traders will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the smart trolley technology. This early access allows customers to explore its features and benefits, ensuring a smoother transition when the trolleys become fully operational.
With this forward-thinking initiative, Coles is set to redefine the shopping experience, blending cutting-edge technology with customer-centric design to create a smarter, more efficient way to shop.
